Two years ago, AEW was able to grab one of the hottest free agents on the market. Coming in to challenge Cody Rhodes for the TNT Championship, and sticking around since then – Ricky Starks has really made AEW his home in professional wrestling. An injury in 2021 slowed his hype, but his recent feud with Swerve Strickland & Keith Lee has reminded everyone that Starks is easily able to hang with the best in the world.
Ricky Starks Can Run With Anyone In The Ring
While speaking with Pro Wrestling Illustrated on their podcast, Ricky Starks discussed how despite AEW bringing in some big names – he has the skills to match anyone in the ring. Starks was quoted saying the following.
“To me, I’m going to say it straight up, I can run with those guys. I can be at the top with those guys. I’m on the same level as those dudes. I know that in my heart I am. Sometimes, I’m having to play catch up with my momentum and having to pick up where I left off, and that’s fine, other days I’m looking around like, ‘this all changed so quick and I need to figure out where to jump in at.’
I don’t want this to seem like I’m not appreciative, but this is a bit more insight into me personally that I’m trying to figure out. I see all the positive support online and people want to see me more, and I really do take it to heart and get emotional over it.
At the end of the day, you can bring in Punk, Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole, bring in Roman Reigns, all of them. The thing I want is the opportunity to get in there and say, ‘You may not think much of me right now, but after the match, I’m sure you will.’ It isn’t just the hot popular groups of people at AEW that you want to surround yourself with, look at the underutilised and undiscovered talent on the roster and go from there.”
Injury In 2021 Didn’t Slow Him Down For Long
His injury came during a match with Hangman Page, where a German Suplex saw Starks land on his neck. It kept him out of action from April 2021 to June 2021. Since then, Starks hitting the ring has been a bit more scarce – with AEW also putting him on commentary for Rampage, giving him an extra option in the company.
Right now, Starks & Powerhouse Hobbs are in a feud with Swerve Strickland & Keith Lee – two major names that were brought into AEW fairly recently. Starks & Hobbs got a win during a tag team match, but issues have remained between the four individuals.
