At this point, it’s hard to deny the path of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as one of the top promotions in professional wrestling. They continue to create one of the best rosters in the world today, and somehow find the time to balance the talent pool over their four weekly shows. TV ratings are rocky, but remaining around where the networks want them, and a move to TBS in 2022 could only help solidify the ratings into the future. However the one thing they lack is a streaming service, which Tony Schiavone feels will come by the end of 2022.
Tony Schiavone Feels Streaming Service Will Come In 2022
During a recent edition of Ask Tony Live! on AdFreeShows, lead AEW announcer Tony Schiavone would be asked about the potential of an AEW streaming service. While he doesn’t know for certain, he’s heard talks of AEW perhaps becoming part of HBO Max – but feels they will create their own service instead. The full quote is as follows.
“Yes, I do. I think we’re going to see a streaming service — This is my thought, I don’t know anything for sure. Just by talking to people, I think there’s going to be a streaming service by the end of 2022. So I think it’s going to come up very, very soon. I do know that there were people in Warner Media that I knew, that I still know, that work in Warner Media that have nothing to do with AEW and told me that — They said, ‘You know that AEW is going to be part of HBO Max.’ HBO Max has all these differences — They have DC. I remember asking someone in the front office, not Tony, I said, ‘Are we going to be on HBO Max?’ They said, ‘Doubt it, until they want to come up with a lot more money.’ So I think we’re going to end up getting our own streaming service. I’m just trying to fill in all of the blanks here from what I’ve heard. It’s not really on Tony’s radar right now, but I’m sure there are people in the office that are working that out for him.”
AEW Has Laid Some Good Ground Work With AEW Plus – But They Can Go Bigger
Right now, they offer AEW Plus on FiteTV for fans in places such as the UK, which allows streaming of past episodes of AEW Rampage, Dynamite, Dark & more – while also offering live streams of new episodes as they air. It’s often considered the best way to watch these shows, as there are no TV advertisements, so when matches go picture-in-picture? Things keep moving without pause, which is excellent for matches with Danielson vs. Kingston.
If AEW could maintain this and expand things, perhaps bringing in other promotions like GCW & PWG to pad out the tape library, and even trying to get the rights to the Ring of Honor backlog? They could really have something there. However, we will have to wait and see, as services like that are not built in a day. PWG would be an easy addition, as Schiavone’s broadcast partner Excalibur co-owns the promotion with Super Dragon.
