The Royal Rumble is always one of the most fun shows of the year. Anybody could turn up and take part in the Rumble itself, and that could certainly be the case once again this year if the latest reports are to be believed. A shock name has entered the discussions of participants, and it’s one of the last names that you would expect.
It has been reported by Mike Johnson for PWinsider that the Rated-R Superstar Edge could be set for an unthinkable return to the wrestling ring at the Rumble. His news came off the back of Edge signing a new deal with the company, which included a ‘nice upside’. Just what this ‘upside’ may be is unclear at this point, but fans are already daring the dream.
Long-Awaited Comeback
This is the closest that we have ever seen Edge to getting back into the ring. He was forced to retire in 2011 due to a neck injury, which threatened to ensure that he would never walk again. In fact, he even claimed that one more match could have ended his life.
However, news of Edge’s new deal and his meeting with officials in Pittsburgh has sent social media into overdrive. Of course, Pittsburgh is the city where the WWE’s chief medical expert is situated, and a meeting with Dr Joseph Maroon could mean that we may not be as far away as we believed from an Edge return.
No Official Response
Edge has reiterated on countless occasions on Twitter that he won’t be returning to in-ring action at any point. But, these rumours have certainly intensified over the past 12 months. Fans began talking again during SummerSlam as Edge delivered a spear to Elias during the event. He later recalled on his podcast that there were no lasting physical difficulties, and he felt confident that he would work another match.
There will still be some fans out there that remain against the idea, as there is a big difference between performing one finishing move and then going through a longer match. The Royal Rumble especially would be a testing time frame for Edge to be involved in. But, he has made a career out of shocking returns and moments, and fans are hoping that we could be in store for another one during the first pay per view of 2020.
