Last night, AEW announced what the first match will be when they debut on TNT. With the premiere still a few months away, I figured that would be all for now. But no, they’ve already announced what may well be the main event. It’s a big-time six man tag match pitting the Elite (Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks) against the legendary Chris Jericho and two mystery partners of his choosing.
Omega and The Young Bucks have quite the history together as a six-man tag team. They made trios matches awesome for a time a couple years ago, as anytime they were on the same side in ROH or New Japan they tore the house down together. We’ve already seen a taste of that in AEW as well, as they had quite the match with Laredo Kid and the Lucha Bros at Fyter Fest. This one should by all means be more of the same in that department.
But to have Chris Jericho on the opposite side is quite the unique facet. And for him to have mystery partners is an intriguing hook to say the least. Naturally, Jericho has quickly taken to teasing a big reveal when we find out who he’s teaming with:
Now THIS is how you make a national television debut…..@mattjackson13, @nickjacksonyb & kennyomegamanx VS #Jericho & 2 MYSTERY PARTNERS. And trust me…you’re not gonna believe who I’m planning on bringing in!… https://t.co/0nxGW5QDbY

So… who’s it gonna be?
This fascinates me because, just looking at the circumstance, I can’t imagine this being anything other than the debut of a star tag team. With how important tag wrestling is set to be in AEW, that’s a very big deal.
Sadly we can rule out the Good Brothers having a Bullet Club reunion here. They’ve re-signed with WWE as of a couple of months ago. But the door is wide open for newcomers. If you’re a hot rising tag team, where else would you rather be, in all honesty? Tag team wrestling isn’t exactly taken seriously on the big stage today, in WWE or New Japan. But in AEW, the Young Bucks themselves book the tag division to ensure it’s significance.
It’s entirely possible that there’s awesome teams that I’ve never heard of that they’re interested in bringing in. But my mind can’t help but go to LAX. The group originally made famous in TNA under the incarnation of Homicide and Hernandez have made a huge resurgence in previous years. The new variation consists of young hotshots Ortiz and Santana, though still with the old faithful Konnan managing them.
Probably worth noting that Konnan is a mainstay with AAA, who AEW have a cozy relationship with.
That doesn’t confirm anything really, but it’s another little facet of why signing with AEW would be a fantastic move for LAX. There’s no way Konnan would follow them to WWE, but I don’t see any reason he couldn’t continue managing them in AEW.
They’re a much talked about team for sure, gaining a big buzz and having their Impact contracts expire at just the right time a month prior. For all I know, they’ve already inked the deal and are set for this match. But ultimately that’s just speculation, it could really be anybody. But again, they wouldn’t do this unless they have big names and/or some awesome talent lined up for a big prime time showcase.
This of course takes place October 2nd and will be airing live on TNT.
