2019 Was The First Year Since 2002 Where John Cena Did Not Wrestle On A PPV

John Cena is one of the most recognized names in wrestling. Being the top guy in WWE for over a decade will do that, but it seems he has truly moved on to bigger things. 2019 was a very active year for Cena in Hollywood, but not so much for his old home of WWE.

    John Cena in 2019

He did wrestle in 2019, doing some house shows and episodes of Monday Night RAW in January, last competing in a Fatal Four Way to name a Number One Contender for the Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble, a match that was won by Finn Balor. That was his only loss of the year. Barring a surprise appearence on WWE programming over the next few weeks, he will have ended the year with a career low of 8 matches, a number only topped by 1999 & 2000 where he was just starting in the industry as a rookie. His most active year was 2011 where he wrestled 202 matches.

Cena also showed up at Wrestlemania, bringing back The Doctor of Thuganomics to massive applause. He didn’t wrestle at the event though. The last time we saw Cena at a PPV was in 2018 at WWE Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Austraila. He teamed with Bobby Lashley to defeat Elias & Kevin Owens. This makes 2019 the first year since 2002 where we did not see Big Match John compete on a major event for WWE.

    Acting Is His Priority

John Cena in recent years has become a very accomplished actor, appearing in many movies like Ferdinand, Daddy’s Home 2, Blockers, and Bumblebee. He has a few movies on the horizion, including him entering the Fast & Furious series and DC Comics The Suicide Squad. He is not hard to see on the big screen, and he usually receives high praise for his acting. With Cena at 42, his wrestling prime has passed and he found a profession that won’t harm his body going forward, that is just smart.

We will no doubt see more of John Cena in WWE before he officially announces retirement, everyone who goes to Hollywood eventually comes back for more. The Rock & Batista are fellow WWE legends who went to Hollywood but came back to the industry that made them famous. Cena will be no different, and will look to say he wrestled in 4 different decades.

What are some of your favorite John Cena moments over the 2010’s? Do you want to see him back in a WWE ring? Let us know down below in the comment section and stay tuned for more WWE news as we enter the road to Wrestlemania once again!

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
