WWE Survivor Series 2019 is now in the books. It was an interesting show top to bottom, a unique card. Ultimately it was a show I enjoyed quite a bit and I’m most certainly pleased with how strongly they put over NXT tonight. Reasons for doing so are obvious, but hey. A cool show is a cool show regardless of why. Had a solid crowd too considering the ones we’ve been getting by and large for WWE shows, especially for major ones. The interbrand warfare was all over this show, save for a handful of bouts. The main event was no exception, pitting Shayna Baszler vs. Becky Lynch vs. Bayley – the women’s champions of NXT, Raw and SmackDown respectively – all against one another.
It was a big match as one would expect. And as anyone who’s seen a lot of Shayna Baszler marches, you also might suspect that putting her in a 20 minute match exposes her lack of wind and moveset. And yeah she basically had four moves the whole time that she kept leaning on but hey, Bayley and Becky were more than able to cover for her.
At the end of the match, Baszler was able to catch Bayley into a Kirifuda Clutch and despite her best efforts to escape the hold, she ultimately succumbed to it and submitted. The NXT Women’s Champion was victorious and this left NXT with a decisive 4-2-1 victory over SmackDown and Raw. For the most part it was not one gained through cheap wins either.
Things may not be over between Shayna Baszler and Becky Lynch.
After the match, Shayna stood on an announce table to gloat about her victory right over the fallen body of Becky. The Man did not take kindly to this, clipping the legs out from under her and having her fall onto the table. She then threw her from one table to the other, and proceeded to nail a flying legdrop off the barrier putting her through the table.
As Becky celebrated her assault, commentary made sure to point out that Shayna submitted Bayley, and hadn’t truly defeated Becky Lynch yet. With how much time and tension the angle between the two has received this month, and the framing of this whole scenario, it seems clear that Becky and Shayna will be squaring off one-on-one, and most likely with some sort of title on the line, sooner rather than later.
Exactly how that will pan out is hard to say. In theory we shouldn’t be seeing any more crossover between brands anytime soon. Shayna can of course drop her title whenever applicable and go after Becky, possibly in time for a WrestleMania match. But for all I know, Becky could well be intending to drop by NXT again this Wednesday and go after the NXT Women’s title herself instead. Might could even end up having a title vs. title match. Crazier things have happened!
For The Overtimer, I’m Jordan Huie wrapping up the live coverage of WWE Survivor Series 2019. See y’all tomorrow night on Raw!
