One of WWE’s lucha-libre sensations, Sin Cara has requested his release from his WWE contract on Twitter.
No Ill Will Towards WWE
In his statement, he was appreciative for the platform WWE has given him over his tenure, but he felt undervalued given his loyalty for the company. He is frustrated with how he and his character have been presented, and thus wishes to leave the company.
His tenure began in 2013 when the original Sin Cara went down with injury. That lead to a feud ending in a mask vs. mask match between the two Sin Cara’s in Mexico. The Sin Cara we’re discussing today was then known as Hunico for a while, and he would team with Camacho (NJPW’s Tanga Loa). Once the original Sin Cara left WWE to return to Mexico as Caraistico, Hunico donned the mask once again.
Lucha Dragon Success
Upon returning to the masked persona of Sin Cara, he would enter a tag team with Kalisto in NXT, known as The Lucha Dragons. They would go on to defeat The Ascension for the NXT Tag Team Championship, the only title Sin Cara would hold in WWE.
Upon hitting the main roster, they stayed a tag team and had chances to win the WWE Tag team championships, competing in a renowned TLC match and the first ever Tag Team Elimination Chamber.
Going Solo Once Again
Once 205 Live became a brand, both members joined the brand (despite Sin Cara absolutely not being 205 pounds), but Sin Cara would leave the brand and his partner Kalisto behind. Kalisto would join Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado as part of Lucha House Party, and Sin Cara would go solo on the Smackdown brand. He’d be geared for a feud with Baron Corbin, but went down with injury. He most recently appeared in a feud with Andrade.
Where Will He Go If Release Is Granted
Asking for your release on Twitter isn’t guaranteed deal, Luke Harper & Mike Kannelis recently tried this route to no success. It would be most likely he would return to Mexico, and work for AAA or CMLL, the two biggest organizations in Mexico.
If he goes to AAA, there is a light connection with AEW there. Kenny Omega recently won their top title from Rey Fenix, which could blossom into a major connection for AEW. If he goes to CMLL, he will almost certainly show up in NJPW eventually, as they frequently do joint shows, especially in January with their Fantasticamania shows.
Wherever he goes, he will be an assist, he’s proven to be a fantastic in ring talent throughout his career. Hopefully WWE will grant his release and he can showcase his skillset without restrictions once again.
