Last night on WWE Backstage, it was noted that Samoa Joe would be a fixture on the RAW commentary booth until healthy. This leaves Dio Maddin without a role on commentary. This means it is time for him to get back to his old business, that being wrestling in WWE NXT.
Dio Maddin On Commentary
Dio on commentary was an absolute treat for the few weeks he held the role. Constant anime references and hearing him improve week by week was nice to see. His final moment on commentary came when he stood up to Brock Lesnar, to protect Jerry Lawler. You could hear fans reacting as they saw they sheer size of Maddin, before he was put down with an F5 through the announce table. He will like to get his revenge eventually, tweeting out: ‘Matt Riddle moved on to Goldberg so I’ll retire Brock.‘
Dio absolutely packed the charisma for commentary, and given a few more months would have been great. But perhaps he didn’t want to give up a very promising in-ring career just yet. He’s proven himself capable if injury strikes, like it did with Corey Graves.
A Bigger Role On NXT
While Maddin has a few years experience in the squared circle, it’s important to remember he primarily worked on NXT house shows. This is done with talent who are still figuring out their in-ring skills, while well established superstars work TV. But with him getting some attention on Monday Night RAW, and having the balls to stare down Brock Lesnar, you need to get him on TV.
One potential solution is put him into a tag team. He is close friends with Shane Throne & Mansoor backstage, being known collectively as ‘The Insiderz’. They’ve commonly done streams on Twitch together to great success and fan response. Shane Throne and Mansoor recently clashed on NXT TV, but you could pair them up saying they earned each others respect. The simply add in Dio Maddin, and you have an entertaining mid-card faction, someone to clash with The Forgotten Sons.
Maddin is a potential star for WWE. His size alone can earn him a ticket to the top. But if they take their time, let him improve in ring, he will be an all around great performer.
Regardless if he goes solo in NXT, or teams with a few friends, time will tell Dio Maddins story. Are you excited to see what he will do in NXT going forward? Let us know in the comments down below.
