Jerry Lawler is a legendary figure in wrestling, and has left a huge legacy as both a wrestler and commentator. At 70 years old, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that WWE doesn’t want him getting physical in their ring anymore. Ever since he took a heart attack while on commentary, WWE is especially protective over him. As it stands, his final match in WWE will have been on an episode of RAW from 2012 from Centre Bell in Montreal, Quebec, Canada where he teamed with Randy Orton to beat CM Punk & Dolph Ziggler.
Lawler confirmed on his podcast that WWE has him on a ‘no touch’ list while discussing the current angle with Samoa Joe. This is likely a rule to mean that he isn’t allowed to take bumps, as he took a Mandible Claw from The Fiend recently. but that simply requires him to lay down and that wouldn’t exactly risk much injury.
Jerry Lawler Will Always Be The King of Memphis
While you won’t see Jerry Lawler get physical in WWE, you can bet that until the day he dies you can still probably catch him in the ring. The style he works is unbelievably safe, to the point where he still is able to wrestle a dozen or so matches in a calendar year. Up until recently he was one half of the tag team champions in North Eastern Wrestling, and he even appeared for Game Changer Wrestling to face Mance Warner this past August, his most recent match at the time of writing.
The thing about Jerry Lawler is, with how much he loves the industry he gave his life too, if he could die in the ring to elevate a younger talent, he’d likely do it in an instant. People expect that once he finally passes away, he’ll find a way to spin it into a wrestling angle somewhere.
You can understand why WWE is hesitant, they don’t want to risk anything happening to someone in the ring at the best of times. Even though he is in great shape for his age, he’s already died once on WWE programming, they don’t want a repeat. I think you only get to do that once with WWE’s wellness policy before they cut you off. Obviously nothing is permanent in wrestling, and minds can change in an instant. WWE could start building to Jerry Lawler vs. Baron Corbin at Wrestlemania tomorrow.
