John Morrison has been a much talked about name since his contract with Impact Wrestling expired early in the summer. He worked his last match with the company at Slammiversary XVII in July and since then has not been seen with a major promotion. Morrison of course first came into the business through the WWE developmental system, and worked under a litany of early ring names for his first few months – which has since spawned into something of a meta-joke as he’s amassed plenty more since leaving WWE – before first coming to fame as Johnny Nitro. It was really after his makeover to John Morrison that he became a sensation, however.
An ECW Champion, Intercontinental Champion and multi-time tag champion, Morrison was considered one of WWE’s hottest young babyfaces for a while with many seeing him as destined for megastardom.
It never really happened that way though, and he eventually opted to leave the company at the tail end of 2011. It was suggested this was gonna be a short break but in the near decade since, he’s never returned. Instead he’s made some waves elsewhere, at Lucha Underground and the aforementioned Impact, becoming world champion at varying points for both companies.
When his contract came up earlier this year, he was considered by some to be the top free agent in the business at that point. He theoretically had a ton of options, as he’s the kind of guy just about any kind of promotion would want to feature. At 40 years of age now, it’s a pretty key decision, as any lengthy contract he signed may have been his last.
Tonight, on WWE Backstage, they formally announced that John Morrison had indeed signed a multi-year deal with the WWE.
This came after rumors of his re-signing cropped up around October, only for Morrison himself to try and play them off on twitter. Somewhat hilariously, this was actually acknowledged but the tweet itself was not shown because it directly referenced AEW.
Regardless, John Morrison is a big bolster for whatever roster he ends up on. At the moment, where he’ll actually be appearing and when it’ll happen has been left vague. Whether he’ll sign with Raw or SmackDown, or perhaps even emerge on NXT, is hard to say at the moment. But he’ll make for quite the fresh addition to any show, atleast for the next few months.
With WrestleMania Season fast approaching, it’s a pretty prudent time to ease back into the product for him.
