The United States Championship is one with a very healthy legacy behind it. Being brought over to WWE from WCW after the Invasion Angle, it has been around since 1975. Legends like Harley Race, Stan Hansen, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat and more have all held this title. Since 2001, it has been a fixture of WWE where it would be held by men who will ascend to legend as time goes on like John Cena, Eddie Guerrero, Big Show, Daniel Bryan & Kofi Kingston. The current holder is Andrade in his first reign, who won it at a live event in Madison Square Garden from Rey Mysterio.
Next week on Monday Night RAW, the championship will be hung above the ring for the first time in WWE, as it is defended in a ladder match.
The First Time Since WCW It Will Be Defended In A Ladder Match
In WWE, the Intercontinental Championship has been defended in many ladder matches, be that one on one affairs or multiman mayhem, but never the United States Championship. The last time this title was defended in a ladder match was in December of 1999 when Jeff Jarrett defeated Chris Benoit on an episode of Nitro to win the championship.
Many have remembered it being defended in a ladder match between Eddie Guerrero & Edge on an episode of Smackdown, but that match was a Street Fight which included a very iconic spot involving a ladder. It was also a non-title match.
Andrade vs. Rey Mysterio For The United States Championship
Two generations of luchadors will renew their rivalry, and this match will happen in a fitting arena, as the last time WWE ran TV from Wichita, KS, it was last year for Smackdown’s go home show for the Rumble, and we got Andrade vs Reyin a 2 out of 3 Falls for the main event. Now we will see them clash and make history over the United States championship in what should be an early contender for one of the best TV matches we will see in 2020. Andrade has an edge due to having a trusty manager in Zelina Vega, but Rey Mysterio has much more ladder match experience. Anything could happen in this one.
