WWE seems to have signed one of the top female wrestlers around today, this being Mercedes Martinez. She has previously appeared in WWE in the Mae Young Classic, where she had one of the best matches in tournament history with Meiko Satomaru. She had also recently appeared for AEW in their Casino Battle Royale ahead of All Out, and on an episode of AEW Dark. Many thought this would have lead to her signing with the new upstart promotion. This would have added some more experience to their womens division. Instead, as first reported by socaluncensored.com, it seems like she has signed a deal with WWE and she is expected to report to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, FL this month.
What Role Will Mercedes Martinez Fill In WWE & NXT?
With her years of in ring experience, she could fill one of two crucial roles in the NXT Womens Division. She could bring her experience directly to the womens divison, and provide new NXT Womens Champion Rhea Ripley is a strong challenge. She could also fill a role similar to that of what Kassius Ohno does for the men of NXT, working both as an in-ring performer while helping to train younger talent in the Performance Center.
Fans initially expected her to be coming in as a coach due to her age, but she is around the same age for former two-time NXT Womens Champion Shayna Bazler, who dominated the brand for close to two years. Age is not an issue when you still have the skills to back it up, and Martinez has enough skill to go around.
Women Are Becoming More Important To WWE Programming By The Day
As the women of WWE continue to gain more and more prominence as time goes on, them picking up someone like Martinez makes sense. A lot of their veteran female talent is essentially retired, people like Trish Stratus, Alicia Fox & Lita, so they lack that niche in their division outside of someone like Natalya. Someone like Mercedes Martinez who has 20 years experience would bring that to the table for WWE. If they want to bring an all womens show to WWE programming this year, you will need people like her on board to be the backbone of the brand.
