WWE Friday Night SmackDown begins! And to open the show, is our new Universal Champion Bill Goldberg, here a night after defeating the Fiend for the Universal Championship at WWE Super Show-Down. There’s a noticeably mixed reaction when his name is mentioned. He gives a lengthy stare to the WrestleMania sign as he enters the ring. As the music dies, the boos really seem to outweigh the cheers by a wide margin. He seems a little perplexed on how to take this. Says “Ladies and gentlemen”… tons of boos. Tells us not to be mistaken. It’s not about who was last. It’s all about… who’s next.
Roman Reigns’ music hits to a solid pop! He gets a microphone and as his music dies, the reaction is sorta mixed too but I would say more cheers than boos. Although a notable “You Both Suck” chant starts and Goldberg seems agitated. Bill’s basically never been booed in his entire career, let alone dealing with heckling of that nature and you can kinda tell it’s annoying him. Roman and Goldberg stare each other down for a good long bit before Roman raises the mic and simply says, “I’m next.”
This pretty much confirms the rumors.
Roman Reigns does have to go through the Elimination Chamber to make this happen, atleast one can assume. So in theory that does give them the chance to have someone else go after Goldberg if they want to, but even with the backlash, I’m not sure it’s harsh enough to force that kind of thing yet. We’re far from a hijacking. So yeah, while nothing is announced, everything is going to plan thus far. We almost certainly have Roman Reigns vs. Bill Goldberg in a WrestleMania main event that seems very much in danger of being turned on super hard. That could change in a month’s time I suppose. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I do feel like if given the choice, a lot of the usual audience might actually pick Reigns this time around, which is something of a contrast to the norm. It’s kinda sad how easily preventable this one really was though. It’s like this most years but it really didn’t have to be this go-round. But ah well. Let’s see if Roman Reigns’ uh… eleventh or twelfth top guy coronation sticks.
