We now know the two major title matches going into the 36th annual Wrestlemania event. These will be the Royal Rumble winner Drew McIntyre facing WWE Champion Brock Lesnar, and Roman Reigns facing Universal Champion Goldberg. These are two huge first time matches, both of which could easily headline Wrestlemania. Which match deserves it more?
Should The Royal Rumble Winner Always Main Event?
One of the biggest reasons to enter the Royal Rumble isn’t just that you get a huge title match at Wrestlemania, it would make you the main event. With two rumbles now, this does make things messy. Last year, the winner of the Women’s Royal Rumble went on to Wrestlemania to main event, that being Becky Lynch. Meanwhile, the winner of the Mens Royal Rumble, Seth Rollins opened the show off hot against Brock Lesnar, winning his first Universal Championship.
The Rumble winner hasn’t always went on to main event. Rey Mysterio didn’t main event in 2006, Batista didn’t main event in 2007, John Cena didn’t main event in 2008, Chris Jeicho didn’t main event in 2010, and Alberto Del Rio certainly wasn’t going to main event in 2011. This could be the same for Drew McIntyre, where he isn’t quite a proven star yet, still being on the edge of greatness. While Brock Lesnar absolutely brings the star power for a main event, McIntyre doesn’t yet.
Roman Reigns Fifth Main Event At Wrestlemania
With Roman Reigns being the current golden child of WWE, it increases his odds of his encounter with Goldberg being in that coveted main event slot. He has so far been in the final match of four Wrestlemanias, two of which involved him facing Brock Lesnar, one against Triple H, and one against Undertaker. Roman is a proven hand at giving his all in these big matches, making him a safe pick.
The hard part of this match is Goldberg. His recent match with The Fiend was short and very rough, with him not even being able to properly do The Jackhammer. The main event of Wrestlemania with Goldberg involved could just be a mess for the washed up legend, who might not be in good enough condition for such a major role, unlike both men in Lesnar vs. McIntyre.
Both matches have their pros and cons as a main event. I feel like one will open the show, and one will close it. Drew beating Brock in the opening match would get the crowd fired up early, and Romans potentially beating Goldberg to end the show will send the tired crowd home with mixed feelings.
