One of the best parts of the WWE Network is the documentary type content that is hosted there. Stuff like WWE 24, WWE 365 and more will often pay for the price of admission on their own. One of the most ambitious series was Monday Night Wars, which documented the battle between WWF & WCW in the late 90’s, the peak of wresting popularity. It was skewed towards a WWE heavy focus, which makes sense seeing as they were the victors of the Monday Night Wars. This time around however, the series will be focused on what is known by fans as The Ruthless Aggression Era.
What Is The Ruthless Aggression Era?
The Ruthless Aggression era followed the conclusion of WWE’s rivalry with WCW, the rise of future stars such as John Cena, Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton and the internal competition between Raw and SmackDown with the first Brand Split. It was the first time WWE truly had no one to challenge them, as they had bought out their biggest competition. It has become something drenched in nostalgia for many younger fans, as it was what they grew up with. This era lasted from 2002 to 2008.
What Will Episodes Focus On?
The first episode of this new series will air on Sunday, Feb. 16, with four more episodes coming every Monday following that initial date.
Episode one will focus on the post WCW landscape, and how WWE was coping with losing their biggest stars in The Rock & Stone Cold Steve Austin. It should also shed light on the decision to split their brand at this tough time.
Episode two will focus on the rise of John Cena to becoming the face of the company, despite once being on the brink of being fired. He would remain polarizing to fans, but became one of the biggest stars of the next two decades of programming.
Episode three will put a spotlight on the Evolution faction, which was responsible for the Triple H “reign of terror” and the rise of Batista as a mega star. We will find out what brought Triple H, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, and Batista together, and what tore them apart.
Episode four focuses on the meteoric rise in WWE of Brock Lesnar, as well as his controversial and headline-making decision to abruptly leave in 2004 at the peak of his run.
The final episode will go in depth on the behind the scenes aspects of the Brand Split, a defining feature of this era.
