Despite all that’s been going down, we’re still here. We’ve all made it through another week. And it’s gonna be quite a weekend. Regardless of what you think about it, WWE is going through with this. For better or worse, WrestleMania 36 has arrived. In an unprecedented circumstance to say the least, we will see WrestleMania play out over the span of two nights with nobody there to watch it live. Everything is in disarray right now. WWE is no different, no matter how much they might want to pretend that the outside world has no bearing on them. Take this fatal five way for Bayley’s WWE SmackDown Women’s title, which was originally a six way. That’s just one of the several ways it’s been altered by the last few week’s events.
It was only over the past year that I started writing about wrestling for a living. I never could’ve imagined that the first WrestleMania that I ever covered would be a single thing like this. Regardless… my name is Jordan Huie and I’m glad to have you here with us at the Overtimer. You can rest assured that we’ll be giving you the same coverage as we always do for WrestleMania. This year’s iteration, if nothing else, will be totally unlike any edition that’s come before or any edition that will ever come in the future. So with that said… let’s get to the previews, as I have plenty left to write.
(Note: At the time of writing, WWE have not announced which matches will be airing on which day.)
WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship Fatal Five Way Elimination Match: Bayley © vs. Lacey Evans vs. Naomi vs. Tamina vs. Sasha Banks
It’s been said that originally, this was meant to be Bayley defending her title against Sasha Banks. The split that they first teased like, legitimately three years ago now, was intended to finally culminate in a big WrestleMania singles match between the pair. But with all that’s been happening, they put the kibosh on that and decided to build to this slower. Thus, Paige announced a six way match instead that just happened to include Bayley’s good buddy Sasha.
That initial announcement featured Dana Brooke. The next week, they casually referred to it as a five way without naming Dana or giving a reason for her leave. It had already broken days earlier that she was missing the show due to quarantine. Fans of Carmella weren’t happy to hear that she’d been ‘snubbed’ from this match but it seems safe to assume she’s in a similar boat and just happened to make that clear before it came time to announce the match.
And that’s how Tamina ended up getting a title shot at WrestleMania. They’ve even focused on making her look strong in the build to the match, since she is definitely the one who needed the most help to seem like a credible challenger, coming out of nowhere like this. It being elimination does make for an interesting promise of it coming down to Bayley and Sasha eventually… but going by storylines, I’m gonna say Lacey Evans will finally get her revenge against Sasha, eliminating her before Bayley ultimately wins. Bayley retains.
