The WrestleMania 36 Kickoff Show is well underway at this point and now we’re brought to our first match of this bizarre weekend. Drew Gulak will go up against Cesaro in something of a preview for Daniel Bryan/Sami Zayn.
Cesaro vs. Drew Gulak
Immediate lock-up, Cesaro tosses him away, Gulak kicks him away, leaps at him but Cesaro catches him into a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a nearfall! Goes for the Neutralizer, Gulak with a leglock counter, transition to an armbar, Cesaro stacks him up to counter, off the kickout Cesaro deadlifts him into a powerbomb and is now favoring that arm. Gulak cinches in a crossface, Cesaro has to get his foot onto the bottom rope to get the break. Gulak dumps Cesaro over the top rope. To the apron, Gulak leaps off to nail Cesaro with a snug clothesline! Wants to slam him into the steps but Cesaro blocks, punches him, takes him into the ring but as he pursues, Gulak grabs his arm and snaps it against the ropes. Cesaro bails, Gulak to the second rope, moonsault attempt but Cesaro catches him only for Gulak to counter into a rana! Sends Cesaro into the steps twice, throws him into the ring. Goes up top now. Flies at Cesaro but the Swiss Superman nails him with a European Uppercut out of the air! Slowly covers for a nearfall, Gulak reverses into a pin of his own for 2, immediately follows up into a Fujiwara Armbar! Cesaro fights out of it with knee lifts, whips him, leapfrog but Gulak catches him with a sunset flip for 2, leaps at him and cinches in a Dragon Sleeper but Cesaro snapmares out of it, big boot nailed! Attempts the Neutralizer, Gulak grabs the bad arm to avoid it, Cesaro whips him towards the official, Gulak has to stop himself, turns around into a European Uppercut, hoists him up onto his shoulders for a crazy no-hands Airplane Spin and lets him fall, makes the pin and that is that!
Winner: Cesaro
As one would expect between these two, an extraordinarily well worked match. It was about as good as you can get in three minutes really. Athleticism, hard hits, technical exchanges and intricate counters, even a little bit of a story – Gulak targeted the arm and kept him from using the Neutralizer, so Cesaro had to find way to finish him without using his arms. Very cool.
