Despite everything that’s happening, we’re still here. We’ve made it to the end of another week. And WWE is indeed going through with this. For better or worse, WrestleMania 36 is now upon us, starting tonight. In a truly unprecedented circumstance, we will see WrestleMania play out over the span of two nights with no fans in attendance. It’d be an understatement to say that everything is in disarray right now and WWE is no different, no matter how much they might want to pretend that the outside world can’t affect them. Although the circumstance did allow King Corbin to throw Elias off a balcony in what I found to be the most campy and hilarious WWE moment in years, so there is atleast that.
I can certainly tell you this much: I never thought that the first WrestleMania I covered as a columnist would be a single thing like this. But even so. I’m Jordan Huie, you’re here at the Overtimer and you can rest assured, we’ll be giving you the same coverage as always for WrestleMania. This year’s iteration, if nothing else, will be totally unlike any edition that’s come before or any edition that will ever come in the future. So with all that said… let’s get to the previews.
(Note: At the time of writing, WWE have not announced which matches will be airing on which day.)
Elias vs. King Corbin
Honestly, these two were made for each other. In a wrestling landscape filled with workers who value their ring work above their characters, we have two men that are basically pure gimmicks. King Corbin can have some pretty fun matches against super talented folks like Shorty G, and Elias did have that one match where Mustafa Ali made him look like a beast. But generally speaking, these ain’t aerial artists, master technicians, suplex machines, hard hitting brawlers or expert storytellers.
If I’m being totally frank, this bout perhaps more than any other on the card doesn’t really belong on this show. Believe it or not I’d actually be in favor of it in a normal capacity because people do tend to cheer for Elias and boo Corbin. In front of an invested crowd, they could put on an entertaining fluff match that’d likely be something of a welcome breather between more intense battles. But with no atmosphere whatsoever, they have absolutely no business wrestling each other for any length of time. It just, seems like a really bad idea to me.
But as I mentioned in the first paragraph, they did a skit where King Corbin threw Elias off a balcony in hilariously edited fashion. And while it made me cackle, I’m almost positive it was supposed to be taken seriously. They’ve raised the question of whether Elias will be able to make this match or not. And if he does, I’m sure they’ll try and make a big fight out of it. But it’s also possible that Corbin just takes a forfeit victory, it’d be very in-character.
Either way, I’m picking King Corbin to win. While I’m sure they like Elias, they seem to struggle to find things for him to do, which is not a problem they’ve ever had with Corbin. Plus I see some hot babyfaces coming off WrestleMania on the SmackDown side and not so much heels. The likes of Otis, Daniel Bryan and perhaps even Goldberg will need someone to feud with in the coming months.
