Despite everything that’s happening, we’re here. We’ve made it. And yes, WWE is going through with this. For better or worse, WrestleMania 36 is upon us. In a truly unprecedented circumstance, we will see WrestleMania play out over the span of two days in front of an empty arena. It’d be an understatement to say that everything is in disarray right now and WWE is no different, no matter how much they might want to pretend that the outside world can’t affect them. Granted, the match in which the Street Profits defend the WWE Raw Tag Team Championships against the unique pairing of Angel Garza & Austin Theory is much more influenced by injuries than anything else.
I can certainly say this: I never thought that the first WrestleMania I covered as a columnist would be remotely like this. But all the same. I’m Jordan Huie, you’re here at the Overtimer and rest assured, you can expect the same coverage as always for this edition of WrestleMania. This year’s iteration, if nothing else, will be totally unlike any version that’s come before or any version that will come in the future. With all that said… let’s get to the previews.
(Note: At the time of writing, WWE have not announced which matches will be airing on which day.)
WWE Raw Tag Team Championships: The Street Profits © vs. Angel Garza & Austin Theory
The Street Profits took the WWE Raw Tag Team titles, somewhat out of nowhere, from the team of Seth Rollins and Buddy Murphy. It was the first major chink in the armor of Seth Rollins’ frustratingly unnamed faction. And conventional wisdom would’ve dictated their next major test would be against Seth’s other compatriots, Akam & Rezar of AOP. But that didn’t end up being possible and this one isn’t due to any quarantines. Rezar went down with a ripped bicep, which is expected to keep him out of action for quite a long time.
Meanwhile, Angel Garza was part of a lengthy storyline which centered around Raw’s four Latino stars; himself, Rey Mysterio, Humberto Carrillo and WWE United States Champion Andrade. Plans for this stories’ climax were seemingly still up in the air a few weeks ago, ranging from a Mysterio/Andrade singles, to a four way between all of them, perhaps with a ladder involved. However when Rey ended up self-quarantining, Angel and Andrade moved onto challenging for the tag titles instead. But another monkey wrench was thrown into the mix, as Andrade was taken out of the match shortly after with a cited injury.
And that’s the story of how we got here, with Austin Theory – a newcomer to WWE programming but someone who has been on their radar for a long time and someone they seem to see big things in – filling in for Andrade and teaming up with Angel Garza to challenge the Street Profits for the tag titles. It’s a weird time. This pairing is interesting if nothing else but there’s certainly no reason to think they’re about to be tag champs. Street Profits to retain.
