Alongside A-Block member Tony Nese, there is only one man in the tournament for the Interim Cruiserweight Championship who knows what it is like to become champion. This is Akira Tozawa, who previously beat Neville (now PAC in AEW) to win it in 2017, only to lose it 6 days later. Since then, Tozawa has had only a few chances to become a two time champion, with his last coming in November when he took Lio Rush to the limit. Is it finally time for Tozawa to start winning again?
Akira Tozawa Has To Refind Himself In This Tournament
In the last WWE Draft, Akira Tozawa joined the Monday Night RAW roster, leaving NXT & 205 Live. Since then, he has hard a very hard time finding victories. Only having a single victory in 2020 when he beat Eric Young on an episode of Main Event, Tozawa needs to find the man who once became champion again. Even on the most recent Monday Night RAW, Tozawa took a loss to Austin Theory, so he could be entering this tournament with very little momentum.
This could also give him extra motivation. No one expected Tozawa in this tournament, and he has a chance to make sure everyone remember why he is still in WWE. The roster is stacked, and Tozawa has done very little to prove he still belongs. This tournament is that chance for Tozawa.
Tozawa Is Known As The Stamina Monster
Coming through the dojo system in Dragon Gate, the 15 year pro is someone who is hard to stop once he gets going. Before joining WWE, seeing Tozawa in matches that went 20+ minutes was the standard, who never seems to get tired. A round robin style tournament is hard to survive, often being grueling. This benefits Tozawa greatly, as others might get tired while he stays fresh. We could see him drop his first match, but come back and win his next two over tired opponents.
He needs to stop Isiah ‘Swerve’ Scott, Gentleman Jack Gallagher and El Hijo Del Fantasma. There will be no easy matches in sight for Tozawa, but that could be what it takes to get him back to being a true champion. Will Akira Tozawa prove he is worthy to be a two time champion?
