Starting this Wednesday, we will see the first ever Round Robin style tournament in WWE history. This will be to name the first ever interim Cruiserweight Champion, as due to current travel restrictions, the current champion Jordan Devlin is unable to defend his championship. He will watch from the sidelines as 8 men look to stake their claim as the second best in the division, and one of those men is the former 205 Live General Manager, Drave Maverick. Can the former 24/7 Champion add another title to his resume?
More Than Just A Comedic Genius
While WWE fans have only seen Drake Maverick on rare occasions in the ring, he has been seen plenty as a comedy character. He has pissed his pants at Survivor Series, and feuded with R-Truth over the 24/7 Championship. However, fans of 205 Live know that he is no one to mess with. He had a brutal unsanctioned match with Mike Kannelis in 2019, one of the most intense matches in the history of 205 Live. When he gets serious, he might be an underdog, but he has bite.
This Is His Time To Prove Himself
When looking over the 8 men involved, Maverick stands out for many reasons. However, he has explained exactly why he is in this tournament via Twitter. After his match with Kannelis, he never intended to wrestle again for WWE again. But that match gave him the bug, and since that day he has tried to get back into the ring. Because of this, he has stepped down as the 205 Live general manager, and passed that role to William Regal. This is his chance to show the fans what he can do, and he will not be taking this chance lightly.
Drake Maverick Could Be A Bracket Breaker
During this tournament, he will face Jake Atlas, Tony Nese and KUSHIDA. While he might not be able to beat them all, he could still play the crucial role of a bracket breaker. He is the hardest man in this tournament to scout, as he has rarely wrestled in WWE. This makes him dangerous, as sometimes not being able to predict what an opponent will do is all it takes to ruin your game plan. He is hungry to prove himself, he is a skilled competitor, but will all that be enough?
Could the man who previously managed this division become it’s top champion? Will Drake Maverick become the interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion?
