One of the marquee matches at Wrestlemania 36 was set to be Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg. This was changed at the last minute to have Braun Strowman face off against Goldberg instead, due to Roman Reigns refusing to compete. Few could blame his for this stance, as with the threat of COVID-19 in place, he was at higher risk due to his recent bout with Leukemia. However, could WWE owner Vince McMahon be angry about this?
Vince McMahon Doesn’t Want Roman Reigns Mentioned On TV Right Now
As noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the current instructions are to not mention Roman Reigns. This was seen with Braun Strowman who made no mention of Roman, just focusing on Goldberg saying that he took the door off its hinges and put Goldberg down for good. This could be looked at in a few ways. They might be not keen on drawing attention to the situation of Roman Reigns not being on TV. WWE don’t want people to be talking about the very real risks they are taking by continuing shows, especially when a cancer survivor felt unsafe in the enviroment that they created.
This Could Be A Sign Of Lost Faith In Roman
After winning four world championships and main eventing four straight Wrestlemania events, it is very clear that WWE wants Roman Reigns to be a star. He has had a nearly unprecident push to the top after his time in The Shield, despite getting mixed reactions at best. He has failed at being the star WWE wanted him to be, and this could be the final nail in the coffin. While WWE is unlikely to release Roman Reigns given how much they have invested into him, he could remain in the midcard role he been in since his return from leukemia. It could be a long time before Roman gets another chance at the World Championship after this, as he might now be viewed as unreliable by the higher ups in WWE.
Regardless, it will be a while before Roman Reigns is back on WWE TV. He will likely be staying home with his wife and kids until the global pandemic is in a less serious state. Do you think WWE could be angry at Roman Reigns for pulling out of Wrestlemania 36?
