Another edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown is on tonight and you can expect the same coverage as always. That means live results from the show plus detailed recaps of every segment. And of course before that, a preview of what’s to come. This is the SmackDown after WrestleMania, generally much less renowned than the vaunted Raw after Mania. I imagine this year they might’ve wanted to change that seeing as these days SD actually does tend to get bigger numbers… but it turns out this really wasn’t the time to kick up a new tradition. We’ll see what we get tonight anyway. Here’s the WWE Friday Night SmackDown Preview!
Braun Strowman Celebrates His WWE Universal Championship Victory
At this exact time a week ago, we didn’t even know for sure that Strowman was going to be challenging Goldberg for the Universal title. Granted there were some reports of it, but there were some falsities mixed in with facts as far as what was going on at WrestleMania was concerned, so it was hard to say for sure. But indeed he not only challenged Goldberg but, in one of the more shocking results of the weekend, ended up taking his first world title in the process as well.
This means that the Roman Reigns/Goldberg match, if it even does happen now, probably won’t be for a world title. And it kinda seems like Goldberg might be done with WWE in general. I mean that’d certainly be one reason for him to drop the title to Strowman… logical as any other. All that said, Braun did finally get the big one. Years overdue and maybe at the worst possible time, not just due to the quarantine but because of his own personal comments leading to folks souring on him just weeks before this. But he won it all the same and now he’s here to celebrate, and presumably find his initial challenger.
Judging by how they handled Drew McIntyre with a similar situation on Raw, I’m assuming his first title defense will be against Mark Henry.
WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships: Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross (c) vs. The Kabuki Warriors
Asuka’s invasions on SmackDown were a key part of this feud as it was building for Mania, as was Alexa and Nikki’s constant taunting of Asuka and Kairi, accusing them of hiding on Raw to avoid them. So it’s only fitting really that after the title win, Asuka and Kairi now have to come to SmackDown to face them on their hometurf for this immediate rematch. Part of me wonders if Bliss-Cross only won at Mania for the sake of a surprise face victory and if perhaps the Kabukis will just win them right back here. Perhaps the “real” Alexa/Nikki title win will be saved for when fans are in attendance. Hard to say… but if you think about it, WWE does tend to do this with a title most years. This seems the most likely target for that this time around… yeah, I guess I’ll predict Kabuki Warriors over.
