WWE has put a large focus on their womens division in recent years, and it has given us some of the best matches in recent memory. One great source of those matches were the two Mae Young Classic tournaments. In 2017 & 2018 we saw a field of talented unsigned and overlooked women given the chance to shine within WWE. In 2017, Kairi Sane won and in 2018 Toni Storm won. Beyond them, many of the top stars in WWE made their debut in the tournament, names like Lacey Evans, Io Shirai, Dakota Kai, Tegan Nox, Rhea Ripley and more.
Confirmed By Triple H Himself
During an interview with Inside The Ropes, Triple H confirmed plans for a third Mae Young Classic saying the following. “We’re gonna do it again here soon, and we’re kind of getting to that point again now, like, wow, there is just a lot out there. So they are here and there and they’re all over the place. I think the talent sort of gravitate toward finding each other and they end up in these little pockets and then they’re all learning from each other but helping to bring that out and show it to the rest of the world is the goal.”
Who Is Likely To Be In The Third Mae Young Classic
While these tournaments are very hard to predict, there are a few women who are easy picks for this upcoming event. Firstly, we will likely see Shotzi Blackheart involved. She recently went far in a gauntlet match and really impressed, but isn’t at the level of champion yet, meaning a run in the Mae Young Classic will be huge. Another easy pick is joshi star Sareee, who was signed in early 2020 but has yet to make her debut for WWE. While she was likely to be part of NXT Japan, she will be a great addition to the next Mae Young Classic. There are others like Indie Hartwell in the performance center who will be looking to break out in a big way, and veterans like Peyton Royce who could be reintroduced to fans with this.
Will WWE Do Evolution II?
The 2018 Mae Young Classic tournament had their finals at the first ever all women’s PPV in WWE history, Evolution. Toni Storm faced Io Shirai in a classic match which was just one match on one of the most well received PPV events in recent memory. With the main events of Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch in a Last Woman Standing match and Ronda Rousey vs. Nikki Bella, it was a top level card. WWE still has some big matches that could be done at a second itteration of the event. Ronda Rousey vs. Becky Lynch in a singles match, the finals of Mae Young Classic 3, a rematch between Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley, and the blow off to Sasha Banks vs. Bayley would make for a stacked card alone.
