WWE Money In The Bank 2020 is soon at hand folks. We’ve got what promises to be an extremely weird show coming up this evening. It would seem that SmackDown’s tag division is destined to remain in multi-way madness as The New Day defend their WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships against the Miz & John Morrison, Lucha House Party and the Forgotten Sons. Here at the Overtimer you can bet you’ll get the same in-depth coverage as always for the show this evening. That means a live recap and results of the show as they come, plus a preview of everything that’s on tap.
WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships: The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Big E) (c) vs. The Forgotten Sons (Wesley Blake & Steve Cutler) vs. Lucha House Party (Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado) vs. The Miz & John Morrison
So I just went back and checked something and I feel this really has to be said. Miz & Morrison originally defeated the New Day for the SmackDown Tag Team titles in a traditional tag match at Super Show-Down which is a major show to be sure. But I don’t really count it among the regular PPVs and I think a lot of people would say the same. So with that in mind, the last time these particular titles were defended in a standard 2-on-2 match, without any sort of special stip, on a regular PPV show… was Clash of Champions 2019. Back in September. Back when Kofi Kingston was WWE Champion, SmackDown wasn’t on FOX yet, and the Wednesday Night Wars were still a few weeks away from beginning. The Revival won the titles that night, because that’s how long ago this was.
You may not consider that a problem, but I kinda do. These championships have not had a singular focused feud in quite some time. I really though that the New Day and the newly reunited Miz & Morrison duo could pull it off and make no mistake, those teams certainly COULD have had a great feud but… well, they’re tag teams in WWE. What more can be said?
The story here is the same story that’s been with these titles for a while. A lot of teams want them and none of them stand out enough to justify getting the shot all by themselves, so everyone’s getting a chance instead. They could really change the titles to anybody here and it wouldn’t be a shock or all that big a deal. I’ll say the New Day retains for now though, as they’re really the safe spot that WWE likes to park tag titles onto when they have no other ideas.
