We’re welcomed to the show with a nasty sight, Elias being loaded onto a stretcher following an apparent hit and run. There’s a car on the scene that’s being investigated, full of beer bottles and apparently they see evidence of it belonging to Jeff Hardy. Braun Strowman is interviewed as an eye-witness, talks about how crazy it was and how he hopes the psycho driving gets caught. The cops then rush over – along with apparent guest detectives Jamie Noble and Jason Jordan – to find Jeff Hardy lying injured between two houses. The police help him up but he makes the mistake of telling them his name. They also note that he smells of alcohol, helpfully explaining that he smells just like the bottles they found in the car. Jeff is struggling and crying out in pain and confusion, clearly having no idea what the hell happened to him or what they’re trying to explain to him.
This takes a while but they pull him back into the road and he’s freaking out as he sees Elias being loaded up into an ambulance. Of course they have him restrained and keep him from going over to him but he legitimately did sound worried and stunned. Noble and Jordan try and talk him down as the police load him into a cop car and he’s wheeled away.
So wow I didn’t expect this. It’s uh, maybe in the top 50 most insensitive angles WWE have done. Probably top 5 most insensitive storylines based around Jeff Hardy’s real life circumstances. This is all pretty bad.
We later cut to backstage, an extremely bald agent explains the news to everyone. He tells them with an incredibly casual nature that Elias was run over but his injuries are not life-threatening, but the bad news is he won’t be able to compete in the Intercontinental title tournament! He then also breaks the news, like he’s said it a thousand times, that Jeff Hardy has been arrested. Sheamus jokes about how this must be his fifth or sixth strike. This means Jeff won’t be in the semis either.
AJ Styles says this is simple – it means him and Bryan should go ahead and be in the finals as the last two men in the match. Bryan disagrees and suggests they find replacement opponents in the semis, as he’s sure plenty of people would love the opportunity. AJ decries him as an idiot. Sheamus says he’d love another shot, Corbin interjects and says Sheamus already lost – if he’s in, Corbin wants in as well! But everyone else is arguing, saying they should give a shot to people who haven’t had one instead. Some multi-ways are suggested, finally they come to the conclusion that everyone else back there will be in a battle royal, and the winner faces Daniel Bryan – the winner of that match goes up against AJ Styles in two weeks for the Intercontinental Championship.
Bryan is happy with this, AJ is laughing at him and calling him an idiot.
