After spending the majority of 2019 away from the WWE, there were rampant rumors about Sheamus retiring. He proved those were wrong by coming back and looking in better shape than he was previously, and that killed the retirement rumors until his return.
Since returning, he’s been on a brutal streak that had jobbers everywhere shaking in their wrestling boots. Commentators aren’t immune as Michael Cole and earned the focus of the Gaelic warrior’s furor. While many of us can understand this after listening to Cole’s over the top commentary, this opens the door for someone to step through and challenge Sheamus to protect Cole.
Who that is is anyone’s guess, but given their history, there are rumors it’ll be Jinder Mahal following the former champion’s return. Since this is cringe worthy for many, let’s go a different direction, shall we?
Sheamus and the Intercontinental Championship
Shortly before his official return to the WWE, Sheamus stated he’d like to win the Intercontinental Championship as it’s the only one he hasn’t won yet. This could prove to be interesting should they decide to go this route at the moment.
While there’s talk among fans of bringing the Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro) back, I’m going to offer a different perspective.
With Sami Zayn as Intercontinental Champion, albeit not defending since he reportedly refused to appear for Smackdown recently, this would put Sheamus and Cesaro across from one another.
Not only would this be a great opportunity for the WWE to allow Zayn to remain away, it’s give us some great matches as Sheamus would have to go trough Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro to get to Zayn. It’d also give reason for us to wonder if he and Cesaro will join forces as their old camaraderie could overwhelm Cesaro’s loyalty to Zayn, making the feud a two versus two one, which could open up plenty of other storylines.
Cesaro and Sheamus match
Bringing them together can be as simple as a few matches between the two. Maybe some rivalry where Cesaro feels he needs to prove himself against his old partner and friend. After splitting the first two, the third could end when Nakamura or Zayne try to help by interfering, and Cesaro turns on them as he wants to prove he’s capable of defeating Sheamus and ending their feud.
In this case, their feud would end, and they’d team together against Zayn and Nakamura in a string on matches. An infuriated Zayn at having someone he helped turn on him would fuel this, and eventually lead to a match between he and Cesaro.
Now, Cesaro could be attacked and injured prior to this, and Sheamus would take his place in the match per a stipulation in the fine print or something along those lines.
After a hard fought match, Sheamus would have the Intercontinental Championship, and he and Cesaro would once again be friends and go after the other championships on Smackdown. Cesaro may not beat Bray Wyatt or Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship, but he can have some great matches with either or both of them, making them must se matches.
It’s also be along the lines of old school WWE where popular mid-carders could rise up and offer legitimate challenges.
While this probably won’t happen, it does seem better than the Sheamus-Cole feud brewing, but that could just be me. What do you think? Should Sheamus shift gears or continue abusing jobbers while threatening Cole?
