2020 has been a rough year for the NXT UK brand. Between COVID-19 shutting the show down and reducing it to months of clip shows, and #SpeakingOut removing men like El Ligero, Jack Gallagher, Travis Banks and potentially more from their roster, things were looking bleak. However, with a new set of shows taped at the studio of BT Sports, NXT UK is going to be coming back starting on September 17th.
This was originally announced as part of NXT Takeover XXX, but we now have more information on what to expect from this relaunch.
The NXT UK Crew Has At Least Eight Shows Taped
While the NXT UK crew hasn’t done much since the start of the pandemic, they were all brought together this past week for some training and taping shows. There are going to be at least eight shows taped this week, a hard schedule which should cover the brand through mid-November.
These will be done in the empty arena style, something most companies have moved away from as situations improve. Hopefully there is a crew and other wrestlers there to simulate a crowd, as one of the best parts of NXT UK is the overwhelming passion of the crowd.
Where Did We Leave Off?
Right now in NXT UK, there are three champions. First is NXT UK Champion, WALTER. He was set to face Ilja Dragonov in his next title match, with Dragunov having won a battle royal on the last taped match from NXT UK. They’ve clashed in the past outside of WWE, and this is sure to be an incredible match.
The NXT UK Women’s Champion is Kay Lee Ray, who most recently won an ‘I Quit’ match with her rival Toni Storm. This ensures that Storm can’t challenge for the NXT UK Women’s Championship, so a new challenger like Aoife Valkyrie will likely step up to give Kay Lee Ray a fight.
Finally, the NXT UK Tag Team Championships are held by Wolfgang & Mark Coffey of Gallus, who had no clear rival when NXT UK shut down, but teams like The Hunt, Grizzled Young Veterans or Southwales Subculture can fit easily into this.
