At All Out 2019, Hangman Page would fall to Chris Jericho in the Main Event. He failed to claim the AEW Championship, but wouldn’t have to wait long to get a chance to bounce back in the singles division when he got a long awaited match with PAC.
AEW intended for this match to happen back at Double or Nothing earlier in the year, but due to PAC being unwilling to lose matches outside of Dragon Gate where he was top champion, it got pushed back along with PAC’s debut. They’d run an angle in the UK where PAC injured the leg of Hangman Page during a match between them.
This gave fans a huge match on the first episode of AEW Dynamite, though Page wasn’t the universally loved fan favorite that we have today, but was starting to rise. Meanwhile, PAC had just beaten Kenny Omega via Submission at All Out, having countered the One Winged Angel.
PAC Shows Why He’s The Bastard
This match got physical in a hurry, both men throwing heavy shots back and forth, with Page getting the upper hand until PAC started throwing kicks. Page wouldn’t be outdone, and ran PAC through with a lariat, turning him inside out. A heavy chop sent PAC to the outside, with Page following him and throwing him hard into the barricade, before diving through the ropes onto PAC.
Page was already going for the Buckshot Lariat, but PAC countered. He’d instead hit the Fallaway Slam into the running Shooting Star Press, getting a near fall. PAC would counter a suplex, and slingshot Page on the top rope before going after him on the outside, stomping his head on the apron and hitting an Asai Moonsault.
Page would be thrown back in the ring, and hit with a springboard 450 splash, getting a two count. PAC would be softening up Page for the Black Arrow or The Brutalizer, actually setting up the Black Arrow but Page rolled far away. Page would rush in and hit a superkick, hitting a Fallaway Slam off the top rope, then a running dropkick. A flapjack would end this exchange, but only get a two count.
Hangman Page Doesn’t Get The Huge Comeback
Page would be sent right into the steel ring post, as this match went into a commercial break. Throughout the break, PAC would beat down Page, kicking him all around the ring. Page would need a huge comeback to win. He’d throw clubbing blows and a big spinebuster, and try to set up the Deadeye.
PAC evaded and went for a springboard, only to take a rolling elbow to the face and a pop up powerbomb, getting a near fall. Page would again set up the Buckshot Lariat, but PAC rolled out of the ring, so Page went after him with a moonsault off the top rope. One more chance at the Buckshot would be avoided, and the referee would be distracted allowing a low-blow from PAC.
The Black Arrow to the back would be followed up with the Brutalizer, a deadly finishing combo which will eventually win PAC gold at some point, and got him the win in this match.
Where Did They Go From Here?
PAC would go on to form Death Triangle with The Lucha Bros, but then get stuck in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic, with fans awaiting his return. Page on the other hand has become the biggest fan favorite in AEW, with a long burn storyline of inner doubt leading to him being kicked out of The Elite. He had a long run as AEW Tag Team Champions with Kenny Omega, and they’re set for a big singles match somewhere in the future.
