The only non-title match on tonight’s card, sees a grudge match play out. Ever since a beatdown following one of the triple threat matches to qualify for the NXT North American Championship ladder match, Velveteen Dream has been feuding with KUSHIDA. This has brought out a new side of KUSHIDA, one who is ready to take Dream’s arm as a trophy, and who has the skills to do exactly this. It’s time for the 6x IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion to show NXT what he’s all about.
Velveteen Dream Is Brutalized
Before Dream could even finish his entrance inspired by Doc Brown from Back To The Future, KUSHIDA would attack and brutalize him! Dream would try to introduce a steel chair, but the referee prevented this before it got hardcore. KUSHIDA maintained control as the match officially started, and targetted that left arm.
Dream would barely survive an armbar by getting to the ropes, before getting punched right in the face. KUSHIDA continued this attack on the outside with some heavy kicks as Dream tried to escape, and then hit a massive armbreaker. Dream was getting mauled, and after a drop toehold, KUSHIDA would again grab the arm and contort Dream’s arm around before dropping all his weight on it.
Dream finally got some distance between him and KUSHIDA with a stiff strike, and hit an axe handle to the outside before slamming him into the barricade. This finally put him in control, and he’d hit a big uppercut with his good arm. He’d get KUSHIDA in the corner and hit the Bronco Buster, a new move for him that does more to humiliate an opponent than anything.
KUSHIDA would come back with more hard strikes, but when he went for his signature handspring back elbow, Dream would apply a sleeper hold and ground him. He wouldn’t be able to choke KUSHIDA out as the crowd cheered him on, and he shoved into the corner to break the hold. This would turn into a slugfest before KUSHIDA hit the hip toss into a stiff dropkick. He’d grab the arms behind the neck of Dream, and stomp on the back of his neck, before turning him over then stomping his face in.
KUSHIDA Wants To Take The Left Arm Home With Him
Dream’s left shoulder would be pulled right into the steel post, a move which injured Dream two weeks ago. Naturally after Dream apologized, he’d meet the post again. Back in the ring, a desperate superkick caught KUSHIDA flush, and he’d go up top for the Purple Rainmaker and land right in a cross armbreaker before rolling to the ropes. A thumb to the eye would stun KUSHIDA, before he’d be planted with a powerbomb, which after kicking out at two he’d turn into an armbar.
Dream’s left arm was barely hanging on, and he’d use the one good arm to hit the Dream Valley Driver before heading back up again for the Purple Rainmaker, but he’d hit it with his left arm making the cover very late. KUSHIDA kicked out, but this one was looking like it could go either way. A big wrist clutch clothesline would connect, and Dream went up for a third Purple Rainmaker, but he’d be met up top. KUSHIDA came off the top with the Hoverboard Lock, and Dream would fight through and get KUSHIDA up for the Dream Valley Driver. He wouldn’t be freed from the hold, and KUSHISA took this one.
This was a downright still and ugly brawl of a match, and one that showed how far KUSHIDA is willing to go in a big match. He was relentless, Dream played a good cowardly heel, and the match was capped off with Dream being beat down even more with another armbar, as the crowd chanted one more time! Match Rating: 3.5/5 (*** ½)
