Conor McGregor was once again revealing big news on social media this week, as he seemed to reveal the date that we would see his long-awaited return to the octagon. In a tweet that was sent by the Irishman, he revealed that his UFC return will take place on the 23rd January 2021 against Dustin Poirier.
The two UFC stars were close to agreeing to a charity sparring event in Ireland before the end of the year, before Dana White interjected and admitted that the UFC would be interested in having the fight under their banner. It would appear as though White has now had his wish granted, and the fight could happen in early 2021.
UFC News: McGregor Raises Stakes
However, McGregor is also looking to have a say in where the fight could potentially take place, as he admitted in the tweet that he thinks that the Cowboy’s stadium in Dallas could be the perfect place for the fight to happen. McGregor’s tweet said that Jerry Jones is a friend of the Irishman, which means that he would be open to hosting the fight, while the huge stadium would also be perfect for ‘our crowd’.
No official announcement has yet been made about the upcoming fight, but there would certainly be a box office element to having McGregor and Poirier headline a card in front a stadium of the size of the A&T Stadium. Current measures in place around the world will need to be taken into account, but the Cowboys have allowed an average of 22,958 fans watch the games in the stadium so far this season in the NFL.
UFC News: McGregor Still Targeting Pacquiao
The tweet also ended with ‘Then Manny’ at the end, which would also indicate that McGregor still hasn’t given up the prospect of a bout against Manny Pacquiao at some point in the future. Talks have reportedly been ongoing between the parties for a number of months, and it is believed that a deal to make the fight happen could be close.
Rumours of the announcement continued to speed up this week after the Filipino signed up with the same management company as the Irish UFC star. McGregor also revealed in following tweets that he picked Poirier as a potential next opponent, as he wants to prepare of the southpaw stance that Pacquiao uses.
