Will the WWE unify the tag team championships?
This si the main question that was raised during the WWE Draft on Smackdown when the New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) were drafted to Raw after winning the Smackdown Tag Team titles.
The stage was set at the opening of the show when Michael Cole stated one of the rules of the WWE Draft were that champions could be drafted and their titles would move to the other brand.
So basically, Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns could’ve swapped shows.
Nothing big, right?
Well, maybe not.
The Street Profits
When this happened, many of us wondered what this means for Raw’s current tag team champions the Street Profits.
The first response is that Smackdown will draft Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins like Raw did Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.
It makes sense and adds an element of realism to the draft and is supposed to make us ask the question we just did.
Will Smackdown draft the Street Profits? If they were truly two separate entities they would, but Raw would also be smart to draft them first.
In fact, the Street Profits are too good not to be drafted. Even though the outcome of the draft is already set, if they’re allowed to reach free agent status someone needs to get smacked.
But there’s another option here, and it could be just as interesting as distressing.
Tag team unification
While both brands have a problem with lack of tag teams (yet another reason to eliminate the separate brands), it won’t surprise us if they address this by unifying the tag team championships.
We’ve said before how the WWE has too many championships and needed to consolidate them and this is the time for them to do it.
If they intend to do this, it could happen before or after the Street Profits are drafted.
If it happens after, then they will probably be drafted by Raw as well and they’ll have to have a match to determine who the real champions are.
A single title will mean the champions will be on Raw and Smackdown just like the Women’s Tag Team Championship.
Honestly, we think this is something they should do with all the championships, but that would cut into the WWE’s income with all the replica belt versions for sale.
Of course, this then begs the question as to which team will win — the New Day or the Street Profits?
Honestly, we think it’ll be the Street Profits.
We see this as a passing of the torch type of moment since the New Day have won the tag belts a bazillion times and the Street Profits are the team of the future.
We’re not saying the New Day are done, but some fresh blood is needed and it makes sense that they would be better torch bearers due to their history as tag champs than Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro.
What do you think will happen? Will the WWE unify the tag team championships or will the teams just swap brands? Let us know in the comments below.
