Leon Ruff had a pretty great year in WWE, making his debut as an underdog, losing multiple matches, before getting a contract. Soon after, he got a chance to face Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Championship, and by all odds was able to win.
Gargano might have regained his championship at WarGames, but now comes the hard part. He’s still never been able to defend a singles championship in NXT, and tonight he defends against Leon Ruff. Will Ruff become a two time NXT North American Champion, or will Gargano break the curse?
All through the night, Gargano did his best to fight off bad luck, but crossed the path of a black cat, broke a mirror and walked under a ladder. If he loses, it was just bad luck.
Leon Ruff Wants To Keep The Curse Alive
Gargano & Ruff would lock up, and we quickly saw why he’s known as Johnny Wrestling. A headlock takedown and wrist lock kept Ruff down, until he bounced around to get some momentum, and flipped out of the wrist lock. Ruff got a roll-up for a two count, and took a second to catch his breath.
Austin Theory tried to run a distraction but Ruff fought him off. Gargano went for the slingshot spear after this, but Ruff had it scouted and missed, getting another two count. Ruff was sticking to what worked, quick strikes and agile moves, but was shoved to the outside when he went for the corkscrew stunner.
On the outside, Gargano ragdolled Ruff around the ringside area, until Ruff used his agility to hop onto the barricade. Looking like Miles Morales, he’d leap around ringside and hit a hurricanrana, but got distracted by Theory. Ruff got hit with a neckbreaker as he tried to get back in the ring, and Gargano was on top as we went to a commercial break.
Coming back from the break, Gargano remained in control with a submission in the middle of the ring. Ruff tried to fight free and took a backbreaker before being tied up on the mat for an arm-breaker. The next time he got free, Ruff threw his quick kicks to get back into this fight.
Would Johnny Gargano Break The Curse?
Some flying forearms would drop Gargano, and a big neckbreaker did some damage. Gargano countered a crucifix bomb attempt, but didn’t avoid the German Suplex and corkscrew cannonball. A rebound lariat dropped Gargano, but when Ruff wanted a second he instead got a superkick.
Gargano nailed the lawn dart, had the counter from Ruff scouted on the superkick, and nailed it for a near fall. One Final Beat was set up, but Ruff dodged! He went for the Crucifix Bomb, but Gargano slipped out and nailed a Brodie Lee style Discus Lariat. A powerbomb into the Gargano Escape saw Ruff fight to the ropes.
Not sure what to do to keep Ruff down in the ring, Gargano shoved Ruff out and wanted to hit a lawn dart into the steel. Ruff slipped out, landed on the apron and hit a cutter to Gargano. Sending Gargano back in the ring, Ruff got a big frog splash, but Gargano managed to kick out at two.
Ruff set Gargano up on the top rope, but we dropped face first onto the top turnbuckle by Gargano. One Final Beat hit flush, the curse was broken. Johnny Gargano actually defended a championship!
