Nothing like starting the new year off with a bang, and with Smackdown closing out 2020 with arguably their best episode of the year, WWE Smackdown Preview hopes it continues tonight.
After his win against Kevin Owens in a steel cage last week, Roman Reigns will make a special request of WWE management tonight.
This could be several things, but we have a feeling it’s going to involve Owens not being allowed near him or something like that.
While Reigns has touted himself as an unstoppable force, he’s still champion only through sleight of hand and trickery. Without Jey Uso, he wouldn’t be the Universal Champion anymore.
We expect him to make the argument that there’s no reason for him to face Owens again. Normally, it would be over after a couple of consecutive wins, but not this time.
Owens has been beyond awesome in this feud, and it’s helped build Reigns into his role even more and it’d be a shame to see it end so soon.
The Stone Cold effect
While there’s plenty of rumors going around that Vince McMahon is planning on a Reigns vs. Goldberg match at WrestleMania that was planned for last year, it doesn’t mean Reigns run will be uninterrupted.
In fact, it’d add some great tension to it if Owens is given the chance to compete in the Royal Rumble to face Reigns at WrestleMania.
Since Owens already uses the stunner and has become a Stone Cold Steve Austin to a degree with his tenaciousness, it’s plausible to see him win the Royal Rumble to secure another match.
The stipulation may be that he leaves Reigns alone until then, which will give Reigns every opportunity to cost Owens the Royal Rumble.
Maybe even give him another title shot if Owens leaves the Rumble. And if Owens could somehow avoid Jey’s interference and win, it’d push Reigns to greater heights still as he tries to reclaim the title.
We’re only throwing out Owens winning as a possibility because we don’t see any way for him to win the Rumble. He’ll be billed and built up to do so, but Jey and Reigns will somehow cost him the chance.
Plus, this would give Goldberg the chance to enter the Rumble as a “surprise” entrant to secure his WrestleMania match.
