There has been a bit of a break in UFC over recent weeks after Conor McGregor’s stunning defeat at the hands of Dustin Poirier. However, there will be a return to action this weekend, as the UFC return to the UFC Apex in North America. At the top of the card there will be a huge heavyweight clash between Alistair Overeem and Alexander Volkov.
Meanwhile, there are also two intriguing matchups on the undercard, with Cory Sandhagen taking on Frankie Edgar, and Marion Reneau clashing with Macy Chiasson.
UFC News: Overeem Looking For Third Win On The Bounce
Alistair Overeem has been one of the most dominant heavyweights in the history of the UFC, and he is once again back on the back to the heavyweight title. There aren’t many fighters in MMA history that can claim to have beaten Mark Hunt, Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar, but Overeem can. That dominance that he enjoyed throughout the 00s and early 10s have continued over recent years, and this will be a huge opportunity for him to put down a marker ahead of what could be a huge year for the Brit.
Overeem comes into this fight in good form having won four of his previous five. The first of those wins came back in November 2018, as he beat Sergei Pavlovich by TKO. All four of his wins during this run have come by TKO, with his most recent wins coming against Walt Harris and Augusto Sakai in 2020. He beat Sakai in the fifth round by TKO in September last year.
UFC News: Volkov Looking For Massive Career Win
Overeem’s opponent this weekend has enjoyed success throughout his career, as he won heavyweight titles in both Bellator and M-1. The 6ft 7 in fighter is one of the most daunting opponents in UFC, as he has won 32 of his 40 fights. His knockout rate is certainly one of his strengths, as he has won 21 of the contests that he has emerged victorious by that method.
Volkov has been in the UFC since November 2016. Since emerging in UFC, he has won six of the eight fights that he has been involved in. Like, Overeem, one of Volkov’s most recent wins came against Harris, as he came out as the winner by TKO in the second round at UFC 254. It should be a thrilling fight in the heavyweight division.
