There will be history made at the upcoming UFC 262 event, as for the first time ever there will be a co-main event consisting of five rounds of action without a title on the line. The clash will see Nate Diaz return to the octagon to take on Leon Edwards.
The fight will serve as the co-main event on the card, with the main event seeing Michael Chandler challenge for the lightweight championship against Charles Oliveira.
UFC News: Diaz Returns To The Octagon
There is no denying that the main event of the evening with the lightweight title on the line is sure to grab the attention. However, it could be the bout between Diaz and Edwards that steals the spotlight. The fight will be the first time since November 2019 that Diaz will be inside the octagon. On that occasion, he was beaten by TKO by Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244. Diaz has constantly been calling to return to the octagon since the defeat, and he has now been granted his wish.
The defeat was the 12th of his career, but he remains one of the most respected fighters in UFC. Diaz had been involved in two of the most high-profile events in UFC history, as he beat Conor McGregor at UFC 196 by submission, before being beaten by the Irishman later in the year at UFC 202. This will be another huge event.
UFC News: Edwards Returns After Contentious Fight
UFC 262 will also mark the return to the octagon of Leon Edwards. After a near two-year absence from the octagon, this will be his second fight in 2021. However, fans will be hoping for a more entertaining showing this time around, as his last battle with Belal Muhammad was ruled a non-contest after an accidental eye poke in the second round. Edwards remains one of the brightest stars in the UFC, as he won eight consecutive fights before that NC decision.
The only defeats that he has suffered in the UFC came against Claudio Silva and Kamaru Usman, with both being by decision. He is yet to lose inside the distance, and has finished the fight himself inside that frame on 12 occasions. This will be a massive opportunity for the Brit, and one that will be guaranteed to get interest from around the world.
