Rob Font signed what could be the most impressive win of his UFC career thus far. Font solidified himself as an eventual UFC bantamweight title contender after defeating former champion Cody Garbrandt.
Rob used a strong jab to keep Cody at bay for five rounds and take a clear unanimous decision victory. The first two rounds were arguably competitive, although it would be Font who would land more punches and cause more damage. Almost from the start of the fight Garbrandt felt Rob’s punch and looked to take the fight to the ground.
Rob Font gives brilliant striking clinic to overcome Cody Garbrandt
Although Cody maintained control for a few minutes on the ground, he did not propose much on offense. Instead on the vertical, Rob always went forward and kept Garbrandt walking backwards. During the third and fourth rounds Rob’s dominance increased as that effective left jab continued to hurt ‘No Love’s face.
Font knew he was in control of the fight and started throwing some punches looking to end the contest. Although he shook Garbrandt on a couple of occasions, he could not find the attack that could end the fight. For the last round Cody tried to press the actions a little and landed some good punches. However, Rob was able to respond to keep the round tight.
In the end two of the judges gave all the rounds to Font (50-45). The third saw Cody win two episodes for a 48-47 card in Rob’s favor.
With the win, Font extends his winning streak to four after defeating Sergio Pettis, Ricky Simon, Marlon Moraes, and now Garbrandt. For his part Cody returns to the loss column and drops to 1-4 in his last 5 appearances.
