Tony Ferguson suffered his third straight defeat at UFC 262 to Beneil Dariush in a hardly fought match that was drawn out and had the victor decided by unanimous decision of the judges. This loss led to questions being raised about Ferguson’s future in the UFC.
Ferguson was quite confident prior to the bout, having promised to knock Dariush out during the pre-match press conference. Tony Ferguson who boasts of an impressive 25 – 6 – 0 record in the UFC lightweight decision would definitely be embittered by this loss as he would have hoped to end his bad run of form with a victory in the Octagon on Saturday, however, that was not to be as he further elongated his losing streak in the UFC.
Tony Ferguson staunchly dismisses retirement option amid Dana White’s “old age” claims.
The UFC President, Dana White commented on Ferguson’s loss and bad run of form in the ring. “He had a tough three rounds,” the President said. “He couldn’t stop the takedown, he couldn’t get up from beneath Dariush, and yeah, he had a tough night. I don’t know, we’ll see what happens.” White continued. “It could be that, it could be just time gets us all… I don’t know which one, or both. But yeah, unfortunately it’s definitely got to Tony.” White said.
Ferguson on the other hand was more than eager to issue a rebuttal via an Instagram post to both Dana White and any doubter who would think his time at the UFC had come to an end. “It ain’t over yet Mcgavin’ … The way I see it … we’ve only just begun.” Retire and give these MF’s a break!? No, I don’t think so. Not on my watch… Now I’m pissed. Thank you hardcore for picking me up when I was down crew.” Ferguson wrote and posted on his Instagram account.
It is quite impressive seeing Ferguson come out of a defeat with that kind of spirit, even moreso the fact that it is his third in a row, previously suffering defeats to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira and now his loss to Beneil Dariush.
Ferguson’s outright dismissal of retirement will bring a smile to the face of many of his fans and supporters who may have been uncertain about the situation of things and this will surely make them anticipate his return to the ring as well as victory to make up for the string of losses as well as to kickstart his move back to the top of the division.
