WWE has been taking plenty of hits lately, and now we can add their over scripted promos to the list thanks to AEW star Jon Moxley laying into them on Oral Session with Renee Paquette.
Yes, Renee is his wife and they just had a baby (Congratulations!) but the odd thing is he wasn’t on her podcast to throw shade but to reportedly talk about his book coming soon.
Of course, he couldn’t help but mention the WWE when comparing writing his book to doing a promo or match. Special thanks to @wrestlefeed.app for the transcript.
“As far as what to put in and what not, it’s kinda like a wrestling match or like a promo. That’s why WWE promos f**king suck because they jam 5,000 f**king words in there that aren’t necessary.
“Say what you want to say, mean what you want to say, get your point across. ‘I’m gonna beat your a$$ on Saturday night because I don’t like you.’ Boom, done.
“And sometimes in a match, it’s like okay, we planned out all these f**king spots but really, what is the story? What are we trying to get [across]? You’re the good guy, I’m the bad guy, you’re big, you’re small, you’re tall, you’re short – whatever the contrast of styles or the story we’re telling.
“Why do we have all [this]? Sometimes, you just look at it and go ‘We don’t need all that extra sh*t.’”
Perfectly put
We can’t add to what Jon Moxley said, and we really don’t want to.
This is something we’ve heard from several personalities like Jim Cornette about the WWE scripting the life out of their segments instead of letting things flow naturally.
Many of us have complained about this for years, but the WWE only seems to tighten the screws even more and few of the promos come across as anything but meandering.
As much fun as it is to see our favorites go back and forth, a twenty minute speech doesn’t do a whole lot to grab our attention.
Other companies see this and find ways to keep things short and interesting while allowing some variance.
It’s been reported that Vince McMahon micromanages everything, and this is a form of control, but it comes down to what works for each of us.
