On June 12, Brandon Moreno won the UFC flyweight title by defeating Deiveson Figueiredo. For many experts and fans, the Mexican fighter started as a victim. At the conclusion of UFC 263, Dana White admitted that he shared that opinion.
During his appearance before the media at the end of the event, Dana spoke frankly about Brandon Moreno. The promoter’s president accepted that he thought Figueiredo would clearly beat Moreno. However, he said he was happy that the Tijuana native had made history for Mexico.
Video: Dana White admits that Brandon Moreno was not his favorite at UFC 263.
“I’m going to be brutally honest with you guys. Going into this fight, I didn’t see how Brandon Moreno could win this fight. Figueiredo is a savage and I thought the first, I mean, the second fight was going to be a lot different than the first fight, and I was right, but I was wrong. Good for him. Incredible performance tonight. Figueiredo looked like he couldn’t get going, he looked slow, Moreno made him look easy. And he’s the first Mexican-born champion in UFC history. Good for him.”
Beyond his prediction for the bout, Dana White defended Moreno’s star potential. Both in Mexico, and internationally, if results go his way.
“I think he already is (a star in Mexico). Winning the title tonight and being the first ever, I think we’re on our way with this kid. He’s in a position where he has to win. If this kid starts racking up title defenses, I bet we’ll have a big star.”
