Jon Jones revealed this week that he has a new representative to negotiate his fights. The former UFC middleweight champion is now working with Richard Schaefer, a manager who has worked with boxing greats like Floyd Mayweather, Oscar de la Hoya and Canelo Alvarez.
In an interview with “SiriusXM’s Fight Nation,” the manager revealed that his first big job in this role is to negotiate the much talked about fight between Jones and Francis Ngannou.
Jon Jones’ New Manager Confident in Fight Against Ngannou: “It’s what everyone wants to see
“There is a big fight there, the fight against Francis Ngannou. This is the fight that everybody wants to see. This is the one that fight fans want to see, not just UFC fans, and it’s my job to see which way to make this fight happen and represent Jon Jones, the legend, against the UFC to see what we can do.”
Schaefer believes that his 15 years of experience as a manager of a large boxing organization, as well as his good relationship with Dana White, will be essential to reach his goal.
“Dana and I have a great relationship. We respect each other, we have known each other for a long time. I respect him, he respects me. It’s really a matter of finding common ground, so we’re going to meet soon and structure a deal that’s good for everybody. It’s probably on the same level, same space, as my experience from the boxing days where I did Mayweather fights and Canelo fights, and so on, where the best deals are usually the ones where nobody is really happy, but everybody can live with it. That’s what I really try to do.”
The manager talked about the big money that a fight between Jones and Ngannou could generate, and again highlighted his experience with big boxing events to show his optimism with a happy ending in the UFC deal.
“I think I understand this pay-per-view business better than most. I know the different revenue streams probably better than most because, again, I’ve done millions and millions of pay-per-view sales promoting some of the biggest events of all time. So I know the different revenue streams and it’s a matter of sitting down and seeing if we can structure a business where everybody can live on that. I have one task and that is to deliver for Jon this fight and I’m going to do everything I can, based on my experience and my great relationship with Dana and see if this will turn into what I believe can be the biggest UFC event of all time.”
