Contender in the 185-pound division, Kelvin Gastelum, thinks Robert Whittaker has a real shot at winning back the middleweight title against champion Israel Adesanya.
Kelvin has fought Whittaker and Adesanya, so he knows exactly what he’s talking about. Just a week ago, Adesanya defeated Marvin Vettori at UFC 263. With the win, Israel improved his UFC middleweight record to a perfect 10-0. His next fight seems inevitably to be a rematch against Whittaker. And if you ask Gastelum what he thinks about that potential title fight, he thinks there’s a good chance the current champ will lose.
Kelvin Gastelum gives his prediction for Adesanya vs. Whittaker 2
Speaking to reporters at UFC 263, Gastelum admitted that after Whittaker beat him for five rounds in April, he believes Robert has a real chance to beat Adesanya.
“Rob really impressed me in that fight against me. If he fights like he did against me, he’ll have a real shot at regaining that middleweight title.”
Since Whittaker lost his belt to Adesanya in October 2019, he has won his last three fights in a row against Darren Till, Jared Cannonier and Gastelum. In doing so, Robert has re-emerged as the number one contender in the UFC middleweight division. The fight against Gastelum, in particular, was a good showing for Whittaker. The former champion showed his full arsenal in every area of the fight.
It will be interesting to see how the rematch between Adesanya and Whittaker will play out. Especially since the first fight was a fairly one-sided win for Adesanya. However Robert has shined in his last few fights and seems to be mentally focused.
