Joanna Jedrzeczyk disagrees that Carla Esparza is next in line to fight for the strawweight title.
Jedrzeczyk, a former 115-pound champion, hasn’t stepped into the octagon in over a year. Her last fight was at UFC 248, when she faced Weili Zhang for the 115-pound title. The contest lasted all five rounds and ended with Weili defeating Joanna. A split decision remembered as the ‘Fight of the Year’.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk doesn’t think Carla Esparza deserves to fight for the championship
For her part, Carla Esparza is going through a great moment and has won five consecutive fights. The last one was a bloody TKO win over Yan Xionan at UFC Fight Night on Saturday, May 22.
‘Cookie Monster’ was the first 115-pound champion in 2014, when she submitted current champion Rose Namajunas. Esparza believes that the only fight that makes sense for her, is a rematch with Namajunas. But the Pole disagrees, and believes she or Weili should be the next challenger.
“That’s what she thinks, she has a couple of wins in a row, but, mmm. I think the next challenger should be ‘JJ’ or Weili Zhang. Both fights are possible and very interesting, not only for me, but also for the other girls, Rose or Weili Zhang, for UFC and the fans. We’ll see what happens.” Jedrzeczyk for The Schmo.
Jedrzejczyk, after being stripped of her title after losing to Namajunas, has only two wins and three losses. She has only one fight left on her contract with the company, and believes she is worthy of a title shot.
Joanna has five successful title defenses on her record, having captured the belt by defeating Esparza at UFC 185 in 2015. Despite the outcome of her recent performances in the cage, she is considered one of the best in UFC history.
Eager to return to action, she finds herself training every day. She wants to fight again and have the presence of her fans.
“I can’t wait to get back in the octagon and have an amazing performance for you guys. There is no sport without the fans. One of the things I wanted to get back in the octagon was to have my fans back in the arenas. They give me extra energy and power, we’re in this together.”
