Samoa Joe has choked out many men in the ring over his 21 years in professional wrestling. His Coquina Clutch is a feared submission that can even nearly take out people like Brock Lesnar, and has won him countless matches over this career. However, he has a favorite person to apply the hold to, and it’s longtime rival AJ Styles. Not simply due to Styles being a close and trusted friend, but more due to the products AJ Styles puts into this hair.
Samoa Joe Likes That AJ Styles Uses Nice Smelling Shampoo
While on the Out of Character podcast with Ryan Satin, Samoa Joe would decide to get poetic while talking about choking out AJ Styles in the ring.
“It’s always very pleasant for me. I get a little lavender, a little lilac with my pain and agony. It’s a rare thing, you don’t get that combination and you can’t buy that in the street. It’s a specialized and happy experience and I get to enjoy it every time I wrap my arms around AJ’s neck. He’s number one. You can’t beat that. Sometimes, the shea butter, I’m not a big fan when he puts that in his hair, it doesn’t have the same scent. When he goes lavender or when he goes to the body shop and gets the good stuff, trust me, it’s a great night for me.”
This has to be among the best quotes to ever come out of an interview with a professional wrestler. You have to imagine that a lot of wrestlers do not have the best smelling hair, and a move like the Coquina Clutch ensures that Samoa Joe gets a face full of it for as long as the submission will take on that particular night. Getting a break from the usual sweat and grime to get some nice lavender seems a welcome treat.
What Is Next For Samoa Joe?
Sadly, Samoa Joe might not get many more times to choke out AJ Styles in the ring, as he settles into what could be a long term run on the NXT brand. He recently made his re-debut as the enforcer of NXT GM William Regal, dealing with the chaos on the brand with a well trained squad of better security. Joe is also working towards an in-ring return, and working as a talent scout for WWE, using his connections in indie wrestling and MMA circles.
It’s unlikely we see more than one more match between AJ Styles & Samoa Joe in WWE, as if both stick around with the company, it’d be an ideal retirement match. Anywhere from Wrestlemania to a major NXT Takeover event would be perfect for something of this nature. Joe has already laid the groundwork for matches with Adam Cole & Pete Dunne in NXT, matches fans hope to see fairly soon.
