Tonight is going to be the WWE’s first weekly show in front of a live audience since prior to the pandemic, and Stephanie McMahon said they’re unveiling a new set starting with tonight’s WWE Smackdown.
Stephanie McMahon spoke about it in a recent interview with Forbes and she said it’s going to include new digital effects mixed with live fans and effects for more of a theatrical feel.
It’s the culmination of the company experimenting and playing with various possibilities during the Pandemic to bring the fans the best experience possible.
Special thanks to Maestro Pro Wrestling (https://www.instagram.com/wrestling_mpw/ ) for the following Stephanie McMahon quotes.
“We’ve learned a lot during this time utilizing these different techniques and we’re really ready to merge the physical and virtual worlds in ways we never have done before … We’re always looking to be slightly ahead of the curve. From a technology standpoint I think that we’re constantly reinventing ourselves. While we were utilizing some of these techniques, I think the key learnings during Covid absolutely sped up the adoption of those technologies in this way.”
Will it translate to the ring
The WWE has been about presentation since Vince McMahon bought the company from his father, and the last year their storytelling has come pretty close to hitting rock bottom and it resulted in their lowest ratings ever.
As Stephanie said in the Forbes article, they’re excited to have the fans back.
“The best way to sum it up is just to say that we can’t wait. It’s been far too long without our audience. Our audience is such a huge part of our show; they’re the soundtrack of our show in essence. Their reactions influence what we do in every way, whether that’s in-ring content or whether that’s business decisions we make outside of the ring. Our fans, our consumers, they’re part of our family and we can’t wait to have them back.”
While we’re stoked to see arenas full again, we would’ve loved the WWE to focus on their storytelling instead of just throwing out whatever came to mind and watch the ratings drop.
We hope they’re going to come through with the promise of having the good stuff coming now that they’re live, but Stephanie McMahon and others they’ve made similar promises before while they relied on the presentation to draw us in.
