Despite holding multiple UFC records and riding a tremendous nine-fight win streak in a row, newly crowned 155-pound champion Charles Oliveira of Brazil still somehow finds himself underdog in the lightweight division.
Charles Oliveira recently defeated Michael Chandler by TKO at UFC 262, making him the UFC lightweight champion. But, that wasn’t enough to change the odds in his favor against Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor. The two fighters will meet on July 10 at UFC 264 to decide the winner of the Poirier-McGregor trilogy.
Charles Oliveira enjoys being underestimated against Poirier or McGregor
Brazilian champion Oliveira has opened the betting as the underdog against both fighters. Far from being upset or feeling undervalued, Charles assures that this makes him feel happy. The Brazilian feels happy to be able to prove the opposite to all those who doubt him.
In an interview, Charles Oliveira talked about his feelings when he is considered an ‘underdog’ in a hypothetical fight against Dustin or Conor.
“No, that makes me happy. To be the ‘underdog. I’ll go in there and prove it. Brother, I’ve made history since I’ve been in UFC. Every time people say I couldn’t do something, I go in there and prove them wrong. Every time they give me someone and say I could knock me out, I prove them wrong. Every time they say someone would knock me out, they end up defeated on their feet and throw takedowns. I prove my power, my KO power. I will tell you this, being the ‘underdog’ or being ‘the man of the hour’ makes no difference to me. What matters is what you can do in there. Every time you go in there it’s 50-50 and whoever has the best strategy and is best prepared will win.”
Oliveira is expected to defend the lightweight title against the winner of Poirier vs McGregor in late 2021.
