A few days ago it was reported that the WWE trademarked the name Happy Corbin, and it’s got a lot of wrestling fans wondering if this is Baron Corbin’s new persona now that he’s not king anymore?
For the last year and a half or so, we’ve grown accustomed to King Corbin following his King of the Ring tournament victory, but his rule felt lackadaisical as he was kept from becoming a true force.
In our opinion, he’s more than capable of being a top flight heel with his size, athleticism, and charisma, but he wasn’t booked that way.
In fact, his booking didn’t change a whole lot as he was even more whiny and the butt of jokes than previously.
Still, losing his crown to Shinsuke Nakamura was an interesting way for him to redefine himself, and after looking dejected last week he has no where to go but up.
Turning face
If Corbin’s new persona is going to be called Happy Corbin, it’s expected he’ll become a face and over the top bubbly and positive with occasional moments where he loses his cool and destroys someone in the ring.
It’d be an interesting change and way for him to recreate himself as he’s more than capable of pulling it off, but it just feels wrong.
Like Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, he’s easy to hate as a heel. It’s something he’s natural at, so maybe he’s going to remain a heel but have a psychotic type of clown persona?
He could be a new version of Doink the Clown or Smackdown’s version of Bray Wyatt’s Mr. Rogers character.
We’re curious to see what it is and how he pulls it off, but there’re some other thoughts out there.
He’s loved backstage
To many, this looks like a punishment type of character change and that he must’ve upset Vince McMahon and others on some level.
The truth is, if the reports are true, that he’s liked backstage. He’s a consummate professional and is help in high esteem, according to some reports.
That may seem odd, but it makes sense in a way since a change that’s possibly this drastic is McMahon and the others have faith in him to pull this off and really sell it.
It’s been rumored that Corbin of one of McMahon’s favorites and this could be the gimmick that sends him into the stratosphere.
We’ll have to wait and see if Happy Corbin is a thing of just more internet rumors.
