Alistair Overeem, UFC veteran, is unimpressed with Brock Lesnar and his return to pro wrestling. Overeem shared his decidedly caustic opinion on The MMA Hour, sharing his thoughts on Lesnar, CM Punk, and professional wrestling in general.
“Just recently, I started looking again on YouTube, and oh my God, this stuff is lame. It’s just lame what these guys are doing. It’s fake. It’s lame. It’s stupid. It’s gay. It doesn’t make any sense.”
Overeem on Lesnar’s Pro Wrestling Return: “It’s fake. It’s lame. It’s stupid. It’s gay”
While Overeem did concede that, growing up, he was a pro wrestling fan, with a particular love for Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Honky Tonk Man, and Andre The Giant. However, he took great pains to point out how dangerous he sees mixed martial arts being compared to wrestling.
“Listen, why did nobody warn CM Punk what he was getting into? Of course, he can’t fight in the UFC. You should have been more honest. You should have warned that guy of what he was getting himself into.
That man got mentally destroyed in the octagon. And if you look at his WWE stuff… I never watched his WWE stuff, but if you look at it, you can already predict it beforehand — this man is going to have a bad, bad experience in the UFC.
He’s going to win, and he’s going to get somebody tougher, or he’s going to lose, and he’s not going to lose once — it’s always two or three times, and he could get hurt. That’s the even worse thing. He could have gotten really hurt.”
Alistair Overeem knows a thing or two about fighting, with a massive 67 professional fights to his name. He boasts a 47-19 record, with more experience inside the Octagon than almost anyone alive. This definitely includes Brock Lesnar, with a 5-3 (1 NC) record, who recently returned to the WWE.
For all his discussion of CM Punk getting “really hurt”, Overeem himself is eschewing mixed martial arts for the time being. His last fight took place in February, when he lost to Alexander Volkov in the UFC. Before his MMA career, Overeem fought in the K-1 kickboxing promotion, and has sporadically returned to kickboxing since.
He recently signed to the Glory kickboxing promotion, where he will make his debut against heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven. Overeem might have no great love for pro wrestling, but it’s clear that his love of the fight game remains uncontested.
