Over the weekend, it was announced that Chelsea Green was fighting to wrestle under her real name.
It may sound shocking, but it’s been standard practice of the WWE to file a trademark for any wrestler’s in ring name when they sign them to a contract.
They were recently in a dispute with Keith Lee as they reportedly wanted to trademark his name and he fought back, hence the suspected reason he wasn’t on WWE television.
In fact, the WWE owns the trademarks for John Cena and Dwayne Johnson’s The Rock ring name as well.
Given Vince McMahon wants a name that’s purely WWE so he can continue to earn money off it once a wrestlers, it’s expected.
But when she was released earlier this year, the WWE wanted to hold onto the trademark, but she could still use it while working with other promotions.
This means it was most likely so they could continue to make money on any WWE merchandise and video sales she’s a part of.
I never thought I’d be in a legal battle for my BIRTH GIVEN name… 🙄
Going to discuss it on tomorrow’s episode of @GreenWEnvyPod— CHELSEA GREEN (@ImChelseaGreen) August 8, 2021
Fighting the good fight
Chelsea Green went to twitter and vented her frustration and the possibility of seeking legal action to reclaim her name.
“I never thought I’d be in a legal battle for my BIRTH GIVEN name, Going to discuss it on tomorrow’s episode of @GreenWEnvyPod.”
Most fans online appeared to feel that it was her responsibility to know what she was getting into as it should be common knowledge, common sense, etc.
While that may be true, it’s important to take it with a grain of salt as it’s easier to say that when we’re not handed a contract for a dream job and may expect to retire there.
As it stands, the WWE has been taking a lot of heat lately for their multiple releases and other behind the scenes situations some are divulging.
As it turns out, things worked in Green’s favor when she received word the WWE was withdrawing its trademark claim.
You’re probably wondering why I didn’t talk about the legal issues with my name being trademarked??
Well, at 9pm last night I received a call saying they were withdrawing the trademark & the name is MINE!!— Green With Envy (@GreenWEnvyPod) August 9, 2021
“You’re probably wondering why I didn’t talk about the legal issues with my name being trademarked?? Well, at 9pm last night I received a call saying they were withdrawing the trademark & the name is MINE!!”
Like her previous tweet, this has been met by numerous fans doing their part to explain to others and Green what trademarks are and how they work, but the important thing is she has full ownership of her name again.
