Some found the meme offensive and transphobic. So offensive, in fact, that it justifies police intervention, with Till accused of inciting transphobia and homophobia. The meme in question featured a pregnant transgender person.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the leading newspaper in Till’s home city, users reported the post to Merseyside Police. The investigation is ongoing.
Darren Till Under Police Investigation… over a Meme
Till took to Instagram to deliver his thoughts on the issue. He didn’t get his reputation in the UFC by keeping his thoughts to himself, and he made no exception for this police issue.
“As everyone knows I’m always posting very controversial things, right, I’m never going to change ever, ever, ever. So the other day I posted this transgender meme, I thought it was funny and I knew it was going to get a backlash.
I’ve actually got transgender friends, they thought it was hilarious. You can’t cancel someone who doesn’t give a sh*t and I don’t give a sh*t. But at the same time as well it’s obviously the offended brigade.”
Darren Till once fought at welterweight, where he’d never been knocked out. That was until he fought Jorge Masvidal, losing to Masvidal via second-round knockout. That was back in 2019, following a loss to welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, and Till has only one victory, a split decision win over Kelvin Gastelum, since.
Till is expected to face Derek Brunson at UFC Fight Night 192 this August. Till hasn’t fought since losing a unanimous decision win to Robert Whittaker last year. Till’s fans will be hoping that he can return to winning ways, if he’s able to compete at all.
Till has had numerous scheduled fights cancelled since Whittaker, including Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori. However, Till was forced to cancel his appearance in both fights due to injury. If Till can remain in shape for long enough to fight Brunson, he’ll need to secure a win. Of course, that’s easier said than done, with Brunson on a four-fight win streak, including notable victories over Edmen Shahbazyan and Kevin Holland.
Do you think Darren Till deserves police investigation over the meme, or is this the “offended brigade” overreacting? Do you think he’ll be able to secure a victory and resume his campaign for the title, or is his career on the downswing? Let us know in the comments.
